During a recent interview, Jestina Mukoko and Ilaria Allegrozzi answered questions from APJ’s Brice Ngameni (Lead Interview Editor), regarding human rights conditions in Zimbabwe and Cameroon respectively. Jestina Mukoko is a prominent human rights activist in Zimbabwe who currently serves as director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project. In 2008, she was unlawfully abducted and detained for several months before pressures from prominent world figures including Gordon Brown, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter and Condoleezza Rice led to her release by the autocratic regime of the late Robert Mugabe. In 2010, Jestina Mukoko was awarded the prestigious U.S. State Department’s International Women of Courage Award. Ilaria Allegrozi is the Senior Central Africa Researcher at Human Rights Watch, focusing primarily on Cameroon. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, she worked as Senior Researcher for Amnesty International, using open-source investigation techniques to shed light on conflict-related abuses in Cameroon, Chad, and the Central African Republic. Ilaria has lived and worked in several African countries for more than 15 years.
