Staff Spotlight: Sergio Hernandez, Enrollment Services Customer Service Specialist

Sergio – tell us in your own words about what you do here at HKS?

My official title here at HKS is “Enrollment Services Customer Service Specialist”. Enrollment Services encompasses the Admissions Office, the Registrar’s Office and the Student Financial Services Office, as such I am familiar with many aspects of all of those departments.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is the interaction with our students. Since our office includes so many departments, I get to interact with our students from the time they apply for admission, throughout the duration of their program, all the way to graduation and beyond. Since most of our students come from, or are planning on pursuing, careers in public service or non-profit organizations, it is very interesting to hear about the significant and noble things they have done, or are planning to do, in their careers for the betterment of the world.

Could you share an interesting or strange story from your job?

Even though we have important jobs and take them seriously, that doesn’t mean our office doesn’t also like to have a good time every once in a while. Every year during the summer we have an office summer retreat, and a recurring theme during these retreats has been the prolific use of costumes. So far there have been events where we’ve dressed up as the cast of Gilligan’s Island, members of the Village People, the use of mullets and afro wigs, and I also recall someone dressing up in a full taco costume once. Pretty interesting and fun people I work with to say the least.

What would most students not know about your job or role here at HKS?

I believe some students might not realize that since our office consists of so many departments, and I have constant interactions with other departments as well, I am knowledgeable in many aspects of student affairs and I am happy to answer any questions or concerns they may have. If I do not know the answer to their questions, I will do my best to find out for them or get them in contact with someone that does.
